What is the best AI detector I can use for free?

Hey everyone, paranoid undergrad here! Let me spill some tea 🤭

Imagine usual madness at the end of semester: burning deadlines, finals prep, profs super annoyed by those who try to play smart and submit papers made with AI. That actually happened to my classmate. He was all bragging about finishing his term paper overnight using Chatgpt and guess what? Our prof failed him and gave him an expulsionwarning! Ofc the prof used an AI content detector, and I did see that coming.

But then I thought, what if use the same Chatgpt for research, not writing from scratch, and then my paper will be flagged for AI content? So I started looking for an accurate AI detector that’s not hidden behind a paywall, but I’m not sure which ones are worth using.

Have you been in my shoes, and what is the best free AI detector currently in your opinion?

what I see ya'll rec here is mostly AI detectors for marketing, idk if they were trained on academic texts
I personally check my papers with this tool cause it doesn't flag citations from academic journals as AI-made
and can tell paraphrased AI text from the one I wrote from sratch
ohhh i feel this post on a spiritual level 😩 finals season really turns us all into caffeine-fueled detectives trying to outsmart both deadlines and detectors lol

i’ve used zerogpt a few times and it’s okay for a quick check. It’s free and kind of does the job, but heads up: i've noticed it can flag random chunks of totally human-written text as ai (like 5-10% false positives in my case) so if you’re already anxious about being accused of ai use, zerogpt won’t exactly calm your nerves 😬

i’d say it’s fine for occasional use, just don’t treat it as some golden standard. And definitely don’t freak out if it shows a small ‘ai probability’ on something you wrote yourself - happens more than you’d expect

honestly, I've been using the Studypro AI detector here and there and it's actually pretty solid. Like, it doesn't scream everything is AI just because the sentence sounds too clean 😅. Compared to some other tools that go full red alert on literally anything well-structured, this one feels a bit more... chill? It's been super helpful for double-checking my edits before submission!

lmao okay wait… is it just me or did anyone else think GPTZero and ZeroGPT were the same thing?? 💀 i’ve been out here using them interchangeably like a clown, wondering why the results were so random 😂
anyway, now i’m questioning everything and would actually appreciate some recs too because my anxiety is NOT built for guessing games with these detectors 😭

i tested sapling’s ai detector on a few writing samples (both human and ai-generated), and tbh it wasn’t very reliable
it missed obvious ai-generated text a couple times and then flagged parts of my own writing as suspicious
the interface is clean and fast, which i liked, but accuracy-wise, i wouldn’t fully trust it for anything high-stakes
decent for a quick check, but definitely needs improvement

I recently stumbled upon a tool called AIDetector, and it looked promising at first. Well, until I realized it’s a paid one. I’m a bit hesitant to spend money on something I’m not sure about, so now I’m thinking of trying Study Pro instead. It seems like it’s worth a shot.
