Career fair tips (after 3 events and a job I landed)

I’ve been to three career fairs during college, and I finally understand why people either love them or hate them.

I’d call my first career fair pointless. The second was… fine. And the third one is where I ended up getting the job I’m in now.

I took that last event VERY seriously and prepped as much as I could. After that experience, I helped my bestie prep for a career fair the same way, and they also landed a job a few weeks later.

That’s when it clicked that career fairs aren’t pointless, you just need to know how to behave to get the most out of such events.

Of course, I’m not an expert and I’m not going to lecture anyone. I’d just like to share a few things that made a difference for us:

- going in with a short list of companies you’re interested in
- having one or two clear questions ready
- treating conversations like quick first impressions (you’re not at the formal interview stage yet)
- following up with the few people you connected with

I’m happy to go deeper, but I’m also interested in hearing other experiences.
Did a career fair ever lead to landing a good enough job for you? What were your impressions?

If you’ve got questions, ask them here. If you’ve got horror stories or wins, even better 😉

What is a career fair? I mean, beyond the surface level. Everyone says I should network, but no one explains what successful networking looks like. What's the real career fair meaning if your goal is a job, not just exposure?

For me, success wasn’t leaving with interviews on the spot. I aimed to connect with 2-3 recruiters who remembered me by name and to qualify myself for future conversations. So I treated the fair like a pre-screening step.

Here’s what changed everything for me:

- I researched roles, not companies
- I knew exactly which skill I wanted them to associate with me
- I ended conversations early if I saw people weren’t interested and tried to make them longer if we “clicked”

That makes sense. So when you say prep, what did that look like? I keep googling how to prepare for a career fair and it all sounds the same 😩

Here’s how to prepare for career fair:

1. Pick 5 companies max and write down why you fit one role there
2. Prepare a 20-second intro focused on the value you can bring to the role
3. Look up one recent project or team from each company
4. Decide what info you want from them before you even arrive

I spent about 90 minutes prepping total and that saved me hours of wasted conversations tbh

I always freeze mid conversation. I know I should prepare questions to ask at a career fair, but once I'm there…🤯 my brain goes blank. What questions moved things forward for you?

What makes someone successful in this role in their first 6 months?
What’s something students usually misunderstand about this position?

These questions helped me decide whether to keep investing in that conversation. If you want more examples, I can share the full list of questions that I used.

Seconding this. Once I stopped asking surface questions, recruiters talked waaaaay more!

Adding my 2 cents - imo people overcomplicate what to wear to a career fair. I asked a recruiter once and they said clean, professional, and confident beats perfect career fair attire every time

Agreed. My safest career fair outfits formula is one step more polished than everyday campus clothes. Recruiters remember how you talk, not whether your blazer is designer.
