Can someone explain “hook” in an essay like I’m 5?

My teacher keeps saying “you need a stronger hook” but idk what that even looks like. Is it a quote? A stat? A joke?

If you have good examples of hooks that actually work, that would help so much.

Think of a hook like the first line that grabs attention. Could be a surprising fact, a question, a short story, or even a bold statement. Like: “What if college debt didn’t exist?” ( makes people want to keep reading.)

A hook is like the cool part at the beginning of a story that makes people want to keep reading.
Imagine you're telling your friend a story - if you say:

“Yesterday something crazy happened!”
…your friend will say: “WHAT? Tell me!”
That’s your hook — it grabs attention.
In essays, it could be a question, a fun fact, a little surprising sentence — anything that makes the reader curious to read more.

A “hook” is like the first line of a bedtime story - it makes people want to keep reading. Good essay hook examples:

  • “Imagine waking up with zero student debt.”
  • “More Americans have TikTok than a savings account.”
It grabs attention and sets the tone!
