Read a Perplexity AI review… Now talk me into it or out of it

I’ve been digging through this Perplexity AI review and way too many Trustpilot comments instead of doing my readings (irony not lost on me). Now I can’t tell whether I should try Perplexity in the first place cause many people that post comments about the tool are not amazed.

I mostly need help breaking down dense articles and checking whether my research makes sense before I hand anything in.

If anyone here uses Perplexity for classwork, talk me into it or out of it. I want your brutal opinions (or maybe good stories idk). Did it make studying easier for you?

To add to your post, quick question before anything else: is Perplexity AI safe for schoolwork? Like, can I paste parts of my drafts there without risking my uni flagging something later? I stopped trusting apps after one messed with my notes sync 🫠

Tbh nothing is 100% safe. Every AI tool logs something, even if they swear it is anonymized. I treat Perplexity like a public computer, meaning it is helpful, but I never give it anything I would be scared to see on a lecture slide by accident.

Most of the Perplexity AI reviews I’ve seen say the same thing: it’s strongest when you use it for understanding technical material, but it’s not for writing or citations.
I tested it on my data analytics coursework, and it explained regression concepts better than my textbook.
But I wouldn’t rely on it to generate full answers - it skips steps sometimes.

It helped me figure out what a p-value means, which my professor never managed, so that’s a win in my book.

Meanwhile I asked it to explain clustering and it roasted me by asking if I “wanted pictures.” Like yes, Perplexity, I do want pictures, stop judging me.

It tends to give explanations that sound right but miss key details. If you’re new to a topic, you might not notice. It’s a great starter tool, but not for anything exam-heavy imao

When it explained multicollinearity I swear I felt my soul return to my body for a minute! Then it hallucinated a formula and immediately took that soul back 😭

If you’re comparing tools right now, look closely at Perplexity AI pricing because it’s a little different from most AI platforms.

1. The free version is fine for quick explanations, but it limits Pro search, file uploads, and the deeper research mode.
2. The paid tier gives you way more deep-dive options, better source tracing, and more follow-up queries before it caps you.

So, if you’re doing research-heavy classes, Pro is worth it, but if you mainly need clarity on readings, go for the free version that might already cover most of what you need.

FYI: the upgrade cost adds up over a semester.

If money matters, check Perplexity AI cost first!! The free version feels limited on purpose, so you might end up needing the paid one depending on how deep your research goes.

I used it all semester, and imo what makes perplexity ai good is its ability to summarize long readings and point you in the right direction. But for credible sources? Meh, tbh. It might grab random papers that barely relate to the topic 🙄
