What VPN should I use? Need student-friendly options

Hey everyone, I've been going in circles trying to figure this out: what is the best VPN service right now for students and freelancers? The reviews confuse me as some people praise one brand, and others drag it through the mud

Here's my situation: I need something safe for public Wi-Fi (cafes, dorms, airports), but also strong enough to stream shows and handle big downloads without crawling speeds.

I keep running into mixed feedback on CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, and TunnelBear. ProtonVPN also pops up often, especially with its free option, but I've heard it can be slow once you really start using it.

What bothers me:
- Too many review sites look like ads
- Free VPNs seem sketchy or full of hidden catches
- Student budget means I can't throw $15/month away
- Privacy matters - no shady logging

I've tested a handful of good VPNs over the past year since I travel a lot for work and school. Private Internet Access gave me decent speeds, especially when downloading files, though it sometimes struggled with streaming services. TunnelBear is cute and easy to use, but kind of barebones. CyberGhost worked surprisingly well for bypassing geo-blocks.
What I noticed is that no VPN is perfect for everything cause some are faster, others better for streaming, others for privacy... If you're on a tight budget, I'd say grab one that offers a generous student discount or bundle deal. Just avoid the "lifetime" offers - total scam in my experience.

Finding the best VPN service is tricky, cuz every site clamis theirs is #1 I tested Proton's free one, and yeah... sloooow speeds after a week. Cyberghost was okaay but sometimes dropped conection. Tunnelbear has a fun UI but meh for streaming... still searching tbh

Most “top 10” lists for the best VPN services are absolute garbage! You can tell half of them are paid placements. I wasted money on one of those shady lifetime deals, and it was a nightmare (constant disconnects, no support whatsoever). So I decided to do my own research instead of trusting affiliate blogs:

1. CyberGhost (4.6/5 from ~17k reviews): 11,000+ servers in 100 countries, around $2.19/month on 2-year plans. Solid for streaming, though the app feels dated.

2. Private Internet Access (4.5/5, ~15k reviews): 10,000+ servers, $2.03/month on long plans. Great customization but not the friendliest interface.

3. ProtonVPN (4.4/5, ~9k reviews): 3,000 servers in 70 countries, starts at $4.99/month. Privacy-focused but slower unless you pay.

Based on all that, I’d say PIA is the best balance if you want both speed and price. CyberGhost is a good beginner pick, but please, please avoid lifetime offers.

i agree, any vpn review i find online looks fake af lol - i only trust people here or friends. Mullvad sounds interesting tho - never tried it. How's the speed compared to pia?

lol same issue here! I’m mostly streaming too, but i asked whats the best vpn for netflix japan?? did cyberghost work for unlocking libraries, or is it just fast for normal use?
